Instructions For Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy

A. IMPORTANT
1) Do NOT take any oral iron medication one week before procedure.
2) Notify our office prior to the day of procedure if you have any of the following:
a) History of pacemaker placement
b) History of intestinal obstruction
3) Purchase one bottle Magnesium Citrate (10 oz) over the counter at any drug store.
4) If you need to change your procedure time, please call us at (650) 324-8881 at least 48 business hours in advance. There is a $200 fee for late cancellations or missed appointments. This fee is not covered by insurance.
B. ONE DAY BEFORE SMALL BOWEL CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY
1) You may have a regular breakfast and lunch. After lunch, CLEAR LIQUID DIET only (tea, black coffee, apple juice, clear sodas, chicken broth, green or yellow Gatorade, green or yellow Jell-O). No milk.
2) Drink the Magnesium Citrate (10 oz) at 6 PM. Drink the whole bottle. Drink 3 more 8 oz glasses of clear liquid before 10 PM.
3) After 10 PM, nothing to eat or drink except your regular medicines with small sips of water.
4) Abstain from smoking 24 hours prior to your procedure.
C. DAY OF SMALL BOWEL CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY
1) Do NOT take any antacid or Carafate at least 6 hours before the procedure. Take medicines on your regular schedule up until 2 hours before the procedure.
2) The staff at 770 Welch will meet with you and apply the equipment and administer the capsule. They will instruct you on what time to return the recording device to 770 Welch that afternoon.
3) After ingesting the capsule, do NOT eat or drink for at least 2 hours. After 4 hours you may have a light snack. After the procedure is complete, you may return to your normal diet.
