7) If you need to change your procedure time, please call us at (650) 324-8881 at least 48 business hours in advance. There is a $200 fee for late cancellations or missed appointments. This fee is not covered by insurance.
B. ONE DAY BEFORE COLONOSCOPY
1) Beginning at breakfast, CLEAR LIQUID DIET only (tea, black coffee, apple juice, clear sodas, chicken broth, green or yellow Gatorade, green or yellow Jell-O). No milk. No red or purple drinks or Jell-O, as that may look like blood in your colon.
2) Take medicines on your regular schedule, unless instructed by our staff.
Remember: A-1 above.
3) Drink the NuLYTELY/GoLYTELY (4 liters) between 4-6 P.M. It will take 3-4 hours to finish drinking the prep, approximately 1 (8 oz) glass every 15 minutes. The prep will cause multiple bowel movements within 1 to 3 hours, and the diarrhea may last several hours. Nausea, cramps and even vomiting may develop in some patients taking the prep. If these symptoms develop, you may take a break from drinking the prep. After the symptoms lessen, you may resume drinking the prep in a longer interval, such as 1 glass every 30 minutes.
You MUST drink the entire 4 liters in order to clean out your colon for an adequate examination, even if the stool may appear to be clear in the middle of the prep. To make the prep more palatable, add lemon or lime-flavored Crystal Light to the prep, and/or chill the solution. You may also prepare some baby wipes and hemorrhoid cream to sooth the anal irritation. Continue CLEAR LIQUID DIET after the prep.
C. DAY OF COLONOSCOPY
1) Nothing to eat or drink (not even water) 2 hours before the procedure. Take medicines on your regular schedule up until 2 hours before the procedure.
2) Arrive 1 hour before your procedure time for nursing preparation at the STANFORD HOSPITAL ENDOSCOPY UNIT 300 Pasteur Drive Room H-0262 Stanford, CA 94305.
This information is intended for patients of Dr. Harvey Young only.
